DROPBOX TO ONEDRIVE MIGRATION

1. Dropbox to OneDrive migration with Cloudiway

When transitioning to OneDrive, it’s crucial to take into account various performance factors to guarantee a smooth migration.

One key consideration is the data size being migrated, as it can significantly influence the migration’s performance. It’s important to note that the Microsoft Graph API incorporates built-in throttling mechanisms. Throttling involves controlling the rate of incoming and outgoing requests to Microsoft servers, aiming to uphold the performance and stability of their services. Consequently, Microsoft limits the number of requests per second.

For additional insights on migration performance, please consult the following article.

Anything you need to know about security during your Drobpox to OneDrive migration is covered in this security ebook.

You need to purchase  Cloudiway File Migration Licenses. Licenses available in your project are automatically distributed. For more details regarding the license management, check out this page.

Cloudiway platform supports delta passes. Changes (excepted deletions) are propagated during delta passes.

You can refer to this article for more information : Dropbox To OneDrive migration delta pass mechanism.

Support policies are described in this article: Cloudiway support.

Although we provide support for our products, we do not provide support for third-party products such as Dropbox administration or Microsoft products. If you do not have bandwith or expertise to configure the settings described in this Dropbox To OneDrive migration guide, you may contact our Sales team and engage our Consulting services.

2. Dropbox to OneDrive migration scope

  • Files
  • Folders
  • Shared Folders
  • Team Folders
  • Permissions
  • MetaData
  • Team Folders. Cloudiway is currently working on implementing it.

In order to correctly migrate permissions and metadata, you need to fill the mapping table. The mapping table is used to transfer source email addresses into target email address. Any missing entry in the mapping table will result into broken permissions or metadata.
If you later update the mapping table and expect the delta pass to update the missing permissions or metadata, it is not the case. If no modification is made at the source, the delta pass will not detect any change and will not remigrate.

The following article provides more information about the mapping table.

This guide is aimed at experienced system administrators who are capable of connecting to the remote systems and configure the tenants for the migration.

Consider engaging our consulting team if you don’t feel confortable for performing these actions yourself.

You need a Dropbox global admin account in order to be able to create and configure the permissions that are required for the connector. The next chapter explains how to create the Dropbox connector and configure its permissions.

The Cloudiway platform uses an Azure Active Directory application for performing the calls. You need administrator tenant credentials to install this application.

The next chapter explains how to create the Microsoft 365 connector and configure its permissions.

The migration from Dropbox to OneDrive follows a five step process :

  5. Run the migration.
The migration from Dropbox to SharePoint requires to connect to both your source and target. The connectors are storing the credentials. You need to set up a connector for each source and target tenant. Follow the steps from this page to configure your Dropbox and Microsoft 365 connectors. In particular see :

    • F.LastName (i.e. b.marley@targetdomain.com)

Once your connectors are created and your Dropbox to OneDrive Migration list is filled, you are ready start the migration. First, you need to run the preprocessing task. It has to be run only one time but there is no consequence if you start it more than one time. The preprocessing task will provision the OneDrive site and set the permissions for the migration account.

Select the users and from the action bar, click on MIGRATION and start the PreProcessing task.

Periodically refresh the pages to update the status.

Once the OneDrive is provisioned, you can start the migration. We recommend you run a test migration on a single user first to check that your configuration produces the outcome you expect.

To start your migration, select the users or batch and click on MIGRATION, then Start button. Your batch will be scheduled and will begin as soon as resources are available.

Don’t forget that Cloudiway migration platform supports delta passes and that migrations are therefore incremental.

Every time you restart the migration, only items that haven’t already been copied to the target — or that have been changed since they were copied to the target — will be migrated.

You can monitor your migration from the dashboard

If you require more information, you can click on any entry in the User List and navigate to the Audit , Logs, or Statistics.
